Is diesel the right choice for you?

Diesel used to be the go-to for a lot of drivers: fuel-efficient, lower CO2s, historically more reliable...but that has somewhat changed.

Summary

You should probably lease a diesel car if:

  • You regularly drive longer distances

  • You drive more than 12,000 miles per annum

  • You tow a caravan, horse boxes, or other heavy loads

  • You want lower CO2 emissions than you get with petrol

You should probably avoid leasing a diesel car if:

  • You mainly drive shorter distances

  • You do less than 12,000 miles per annum

  • You live in or around London, or other clean air zones

  • You want to keep BIK down...or help the planet!

How long are your journeys?

If your driving is made up of mostly short journeys or you do less than 12,000 miles per annum, a diesel might not be the most suitable fuel type for you. Firstly, you need to weigh up the additional cost of diesel compared to petrol and electric, because there is a good chance it will outweigh any savings you would have made from being more fuel efficient.

You also need to consider the DPF filter that all diesel cars come with. I'll try not to bore you with the details (which are here), but a DPF filter helps capture soot from your exhaust, which helps lower the car's emissions. However, if you do not drive long enough distances, this filter can become blocked and cost you to repair.

If you drive long distances regularly, or do more than 12,000 miles per annum, then diesel might be the perfect option for you.

Towing Goods & Overall Durability

Diesel can often be a suitable option if you are towing heavy goods (caravan, horse box, trailer, etc). This is because diesel engines tend to be more durable and produce the power required to do such a thing, without affecting your overall fuel efficiency compared to if you were to tow with a petrol or electric vehicle.

Company Cars

If you're looking at a diesel car as a company car, you might find the BIK payments to be lower than the equivalent petrol. However, you still need to consider all of the above, as it might work better to lease an EV, which will be unmatched when it comes to BIK.

Clean Air Zones

There are 15 (as of me writing this) clean air zones (CAZ) in UK towns and cities, one being ULEZ which you'll find in and around London. This is mainly a concern if you are leasing an older diesel car, as it can cost you every time you want to drive it in and out of these zones.

So, what now?

Hopefully, you know what fuel type is best for you. If you don't, we are always on hand to speak to you and guide you with vehicle options. Book a call with one of our experts below.

What are the benefits of diesel over petrol?

Better fuel efficiency and higher torque, especially beneficial for long journeys and heavy loads.

Are diesel cars more expensive to maintain?

Maintenance costs can be higher due to complex components like the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

How does diesel fuel cost compare to petrol?

Diesel prices can vary; sometimes they are higher than petrol, affecting running costs.

What is the impact of diesel cars on the environment?

They emit less CO2 but more NOx and particulates, contributing to air pollution.

Is there a risk of future diesel bans in cities?

With environmental regulations tightening, some cities may restrict or ban diesel vehicles.

How does company car tax work for diesel vehicles?

Diesel cars often have a higher Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax due to environmental factors.

Can diesel engines handle short trips?

Frequent short trips can clog the DPF, leading to potential issues.

What's the future of diesel cars?

With a push towards cleaner energy, the prominence of diesel cars might decline.

Are diesel cars suitable for low mileage drivers?

They are best for drivers who cover long distances, where the benefits of diesel efficiency can be realized.

How does the resale value of diesel cars compare to petrol?

Diesel cars can have good resale value, especially for models favored for their fuel economy and long-distance capabilities.
