How does car leasing work?

How long does a car lease last?

How do I get the best lease deal?

Are electric cars available for leasing?

Yes, electric cars are available for leasing and can offer lower running costs and tax benefits compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars.

Can I lease a car for a short-term period?

While standard leases are 24-48 months, some leasing companies offer short-term leases or flexible leasing options to meet specific needs. We offer as little as 6 months, just contact us for a quotation.

Are there mileage restrictions on leased cars?

Yes, lease agreements include mileage limits, which are agreed at the start of your lease.

Can I increase my mileage on my lease car?

Yes, you can increase your mileage during your lease. Just get in touch and you'll be given a new monthly rental to include the additional mileage. It is worth checking to see if it is cheaper to do it this way or pay the excess mileage charge at the end. We can help work this out for you in you're unsure.

Can I modify a leased car?

Modifying a leased car is generally not allowed, as the vehicle must be returned in its original condition. However, depending on what you modify, you may be able to hand it back as is. The best thing to do is get in touch with us to clarify!

Can I choose the color and features of my leased car?

Yes, you can choose the colour, features, and specifications of your leased car, just as you would if buying. This is known as a factory order, where we order your car to be built as per your desired specification.

How long does is take to get a lease car?

If you lease a stock car, this can be turned around from anywhere between a couple of days and a couple of weeks, depending on exactly where the car is. If you decide to go for a pipeline vehicle or factory order, it will take longer. The best thing to do is give us a call to discuss your requirements.

What if my leased car has been in an accident?

Report the accident to your leasing company and follow their guidelines.

Do I need a good credit score to lease a car?

A good credit score can help secure better lease terms, but options are available for those with less-than-perfect credit.

Can I lease a car with bad credit?

Yes, some leasing companies offer plans for those with poor credit, though you may face higher payments or larger initial deposits.

Are there age restrictions with car leasing?

You need to be at least 18 years of age to lease a car in the UK.

Can I lease on behalf of someone else?

You can lease on behalf of your spouse or child, as long as you live at the same address up to the age of 21 years.

Can I lease a car for my partner?

Yes, in most cases you can, as long as you both equally use the vehicle.

Can I lease a car with a provisional licence?

Yes, although this does restrict the number of leasing companies available. You might be able to get a better deal if you wait until you have a full driving licence.

Can I lease a car with points on my licence?

Yes, the number of points on your licence has no impact on your lease offer.

How do I know if my business is eligible to lease?

We work with multiple leasing companies that consider all types of businesses, including those trading for as little as 3 months, with supporting documents.

Can a new business lease a car?

Yes, new businesses can lease cars, but they may need to provide additional documentation like management accounts.

What documents do I need to lease a car?

We require a copy of your driving licence at the very least. In some cases, we may require more documents, such as proof of address, a copy of your passport, proof of employment, and bank statements.

Can I lease a car if I’m self-employed?

Yes, self-employed individuals can lease cars, though they may need to provide additional documentation like tax returns or business accounts.

Can I end my lease early?

Yes, although ending a lease early can incur significant fees, including early termination charges and the remaining lease balance. Usually, it will cost you 50% of the remaining rentals to end your lease early.

Can I extend my car lease?

Yes, many leasing companies offer lease extensions, allowing you to keep the car for an additional period beyond the original term.

Can I swap my leased car for a different one?

Most leasing companies in the UK will not allow you to swap your car for a different one mid-contract.

What happens if I miss a lease payment?

Missing a lease payment can result in late fees and potential damage to your credit score. It’s important to contact your leasing company immediately to discuss options.

Can I transfer my car lease to someone else?

Costs and Payments

Are there any upfront costs when leasing a car?

Yes, most leases require an initial payment, also known as an initial rental, which is typically equivalent to several months' payments. There may also be administration fees to set up the lease.

When do I pay my initial rental?

In most cases, your initial rental is paid 10-14 days after delivery via direct debit.

What happens if I exceed the mileage limit on my lease?

Exceeding the mileage limit incurs additional charges, often calculated on a per-mile basis, which is set out at the start of your agreement.

Can I buy the car at the end of the lease?

Some leasing companies offer the option to purchase the car at the end of the lease for a predetermined price.

What is the initial payment in a car lease?

The initial payment, or initial rental, is an upfront cost usually equivalent to several months’ lease payments, paid at the start of the lease.

Are there hidden fees in car leasing?

All costs are outlined in the lease agreement, like excess mileage charges, wear and tear fees, and early termination fees. These are never hidden.

How does VAT work in car leasing?

Businesses can usually reclaim 50% of the VAT on lease payments for cars used for both business and personal use, and 100% on maintenance costs.

What are excess wear and tear charges?

Excess wear and tear charges apply if the car is returned with damage beyond normal use. Leasing companies provide guidelines on acceptable wear and tear.

When do my monthly lease rentals begin?

Your monthly rentals will begin 1 month after delivery unless you have specified a specific date beforehand.

Can I change the date my lease payment comes out?

Yes, with most leasing companies will allow you to change the date of your direct debit.

Insurance and Maintenance

Is car insurance included in a lease?

No, car insurance is not typically included in a lease. Lessees must arrange their own insurance and it must be fully comprehensive.

How do I maintain a leased car?

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and keep up with regular services. Most modern cars tell you as and when maintenance is required, such as service and oil lights. Consider adding a maintenance package to your lease for convenience and potential savings!

What is a maintenance package in car leasing?

A maintenance package covers routine services and repairs, as well as replacement tyres, depending on the package.

Is breakdown cover included in my lease?

As all cars are brand new, you'll get a minimum of 12 months breakdown cover as standard. However, most manufacturers will include a breakdown for the duration of the warranty, which is 3 years on most cars.

Are tyres and brakes included in maintenance packages?

Maintenance packages often include wear and tear items like tyres and brakes, but it’s essential to check the specifics of your agreement, as you can opt to not include tyres for a cheaper maintenance option.

Do leased cars need MOTs?

Yes, if the lease term extends beyond three years, the car will require an MOT. Some maintenance packages cover the cost of the MOT.

End of Lease Process

What happens at the end of a lease?

At the end of your lease, the first option is to return the car to the leasing company. The vehicle will be inspected for any damage or excess mileage. If everything is in order, you simply hand over the keys and can choose to start a new lease with a different vehicle. Or, if you decide to, you can request to extend your lease or even purchase it.

What if I want to extend my lease?

Many leasing companies offer the option to extend your lease term. This can be an informal extension, whereby you pay month to month, or it could be a formal extension, where it is fixed for 6 or 12 months for a new price. Contact your leasing provider to discuss extension options and terms.

Can I buy the car at the end of the lease?

Some leasing companies offer the option to purchase the car at the end of the lease. Contact your leasing provider to request this.

How is the vehicle inspected at the end of the lease?

Someone will come to the address you've booked for collection and inspect the vehicle for damage, excess wear and tear, and excess mileage. This usually takes around 20 minutes and the inspector will go through their findings with you.

Can I negotiate the charges at the end of my lease?

After your inspector leaves with the lease car, you will be sent a finalised breakdown of the charges. You will be able to argue these if you think they are unfair or inaccurate.

Can I do anything to help avoid charges at the end of my lease?

Be nice! When your inspector arrives, be polite and kind, and don't think twice about offering them a cup of tea or coffee! They are in control of what damage they think you should be billed for.

What charges should I expect at the end of the lease?

Potential charges at the end of a lease include excess mileage fees, damage repairs, and any mis-maintenance.

How do I prepare my leased car for return?

Clean the car thoroughly, remove all personal items, and ensure all of the vehicle accessories are back. You may also want to address any minor repairs or maintenance to avoid charges.

Can I upgrade to a new car at the end of my lease?

Yes, many people choose to start a new lease with a different car at the end of their current lease. This allows you to drive a new car with the latest features.

Do I need to pay another initial rental when I renew my lease?
